Declaration of the “Earth Eve” Campaign
「臺灣首創地球夜向世界發聲」宣言
We, a group of university students and professors combined to form the “United Smile Organization,” have a dream. We have initiated the idea of “Leave No Trace after New Year’s Eve” and are spreading the message around the world. April 22nd is International Earth Day. Citizens around the globe recognize this day as a day for environmental protection.
我們是一群在台灣的大學師生所組成的「笑擁青年聯盟」(簡稱「笑盟」)，我們有個構想，想把「跨年0垃圾」活動繼續推展成世界性的環保運動! 我們都知道「地球日(Earth Day)」，是四月二十二日，全世界都以這一天為「地球環保日」。
United Smile Organization is proposing to launch “Earth Eve,” which stands for the period between dusk on New Year’s Eve and dawn on New Year’s Day. Our action on this coming Earth Eve is based on two principles. First, we call on the people who participate in the celebrations on New Year’s Eve to put the idea of “ Leave No Trace after New Year’s Eve” into practice.
Second, while celebrating New Year’s Eve on the day of “Earth Eve,” we encourage everyone to say goodbye to the past year and tidy up their households in order to embrace a brighter new year.
As college students and faculty members, we urge you to support our spirit and action of Earth Eve, which, hopefully, will gain national and worldwide recognition as the Earth Day environmental movement did 30 years ago.
「笑盟」想推展「地球夜」運動，時間就是在每年十二月三十一日晚間，到元旦凌晨。這個「地球夜」英文叫Earth Eve，這個運動簡稱「Double E(E2)運動」，主要有兩個訴求：第一個是要號召全球各地參加跨年的民眾，實踐「跨年0垃圾」的行動；第二個是針對每個世界公民，在「地球夜」歡喜跨年的同時，把自己居家環境清理一番，把自己的生活和心靈整理一下，讓自己、也讓地球乾乾淨淨的邁入新的紀元。我們希望從大學校園開始，推展到全社會；從台灣，走向全世界!
There are only a few “eves” we celebrate, such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. On those occasions we celebrate peace and happiness. We define Earth Eve as a time dedicated to environmental protection, bringing new light and meaning to New Year’s Eve.
有關Eve，只有Christmas Eve、New Year Eve等，這些Eve，代表的是平安、歡樂；而我们可以賦予Earth Eve「地球環保」的意涵，那跨年夜就更有意義、更有生命力了!
There is but one Earth, and it is our home. The time has come for all to engage collectively. We should stop putting our Earth at risk and inspire environmental awareness and protection.
人類只有一個地球，地球是我們共同的家園；我們不能再因個人的便利或自私，而置所有「地球人」的安危於不顧了!
We invite everyone who cares about our Earth to join the event. Start as a few and further affect others. We will initiate the event in Taiwan, hoping to spread the message to every corner around the world. “Leave No Trace after New Year’s Eve” will be an action that goes beyond ideals. Earth Eve should be a day for self-reflection and awareness.
我們邀請所有關心地球的朋友，一起來共襄盛舉，從今天開始積極行動：從「自己做起」進而「影響別人」；從「台灣發起」推展到「世界各個角落」。讓「跨年0垃圾」理想成為事實，讓個人心靈環保、除舊佈新，也讓「地球夜」運動，成為世界性的節日。
