Abstract
ˇ@
In the early 1990s,Taiwan initiated nation-wide educational reforms which transformed the nation from a traditional and centralized structure to a more open-minded and de-regulated system. The overall reform accomplishments have been challenged due to a poor design and an infrastructure that has not included teacher in-service training. Resistance and doubt among parents and teachers suggests that the reform programs have not gained societal support. The author proposes that the reform requires continued follow-up and revision. In this context, the author identifies critical issues and dilemmas which have impacted the reform policies, education personnel, public finance, and school management.
The book contains six chapters based on the following themes:1)A critical review of the past nine Ministers of Education ; 2) Declining organizational effectiveness; 3) Educational policies under fire ; 4)The over-supply of secondary and higher education enrollment and teachers ; 5)Media coverage on education issues, and 6) Taiwanˇ¦s education future.
